FAQ

Where is the schedule of classes?

The class schedule is updated on our calendar, on the registration page, or can be found here.  Some classes offer more than one session at different dates and times.  You will be asked to register for a specific session.

Do I have to be a member of IRC to take classes?

All IRC classes and programs are open to the public. While IRC annual members receive a discounted rate on classes and many other benefits, no membership is required.

When do classes begin?

Classes begin mid-March and continue through September.  This is when the weather is the best!  The registration page includes class dates, and a complete calendar is available on our website.  All classes require a minimum number of participants.

What should I expect after my class?

IRC has worked to offer programs for rowers of all levels!  You are encouraged to keep rowing  by taking the next course or joining the Adult Rowing Program.  Novice rowers can be paired with experienced members to answer any questions you may have.  Many people are surprised by how long it takes to become comfortable in the boats.  Rowing is truly a life-long sport!

What are the physical requirements of rowing?

The Learn to Row 1 and Quick Catch classes focus on technique rather than fitness.  Learn to Row 2 and Intermediate Sculling incorporate more continuous rowing into the workouts, while focusing on technique.  Adults of all levels have completed the courses.  Contrary to popular belief, rowing uses the legs more than the upper body.  In the more advanced classes, rowing provides an excellent cardiovascular workout.

The boats typically used in our Learn to Row classes comfortably support adults up to 220 pounds.  If you require a larger boat, please contact us in advance to insure that the boats are available.

What should I wear and bring?

We recommend showing up in comfortable work out clothes, but nothing too baggy such as sweatshirts, sweatpants, loose cotton shirts.  Socks and athletic shoes are also recommended.  Please bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a bottle of water.  You may want to pack a change of clothes as well.   There are bathrooms and a water fountain at the boathouse.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of your first class. This will allow you time to put your stuff away and turn in any forms or payment prior to the class beginning.

Where do I go?

The IRC Boathouse is located in Eagle Creek Park, on Eagle Beach Drive.  Enter through the 56th St. entrance, make your first left, and then your first right onto the gravel driveway.  Please note that there is a daily gate fee to enter the park ($5/vehicle).  Yearly park passes are available at the Eagle Creek Park office located at 7840 W. 56th St.

What if it is raining the day of my first class?

Check the calendar and your email for information.  We are always able to cross train and teach rowing on the indoor rowing machines, or ergs.

Where can I find out more about rowing and sculling?

USRowing (national governing body of the sport of rowing) offers some great articles for those new to rowing.  Check them out!
