Winter Training 2020-2021 Info
The season goes from Monday November 30 to Friday March 12.
Memo to IRC Juniors and Families
Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in Indiana, the training plans for the winter have been revisited several times over the past month. In consultation with the IRC Medical Advisory Committee and based Mayor Hogsett's new restrictions, which requires all schools in Marion County to go virtual through the New Year, we have decided to cancel all in-person erg sessions until indoor training can be conducted safely for all involved.
What will Winter Training consist of?
We will have Zoom practices Monday through Friday and small group outdoor runs (weather dependent). Zoom practices will consist of an erg workout (with a run or bike option if needed), core/bodyweight workout, and yoga. We will still be divided into cohorts – some days we will have separate practices based on novice/varsity. Once I know how many people are doing winter training, I will send out an exact schedule.
What about lifting?
Because schools are virtual, we are unable to lift at Brebeuf. However, Samantha Jones, a certified National USAW coach, will be conducting a lifting series for those who want to participate. This is the next step from the lifting clinic that took place in September. It will be at The Fitness Lab, which has limited their capacity to 25%. Masks are required, temperatures are taken when entering, and all equipment is thoroughly cleaned. Each kid will have their own barbell and lifting station, 6 feet away from anyone else. There will be two sessions offered (depending on sign-ups): Tuesdays from 4-5 pm and Tuesdays from 5:15-6:15 pm. I have attached the flyer to this email. I recommend participating in this lifting series, as lifting is a crucial part of being a successful rower. Please email me if you are interested!
How will I stay motivated and connected to my teammates?
We will have a Winter Training Groupme for team members only (no parents). There will be one Groupme for the whole team, one for posting your erg screens from practice (so we stay accountable), and one for your specific cohort. You can download the app on your phone here:https://groupme.com/en-US/. If you do not have a cell phone, please email me. I will also be assigning training buddies to help us stay motivated!
What is the cost?
Initially, the cost for Winter Training was set at $350 based on a financial analysis by the IRC Board. As a result of going virtual, the Board has cut the cost to $200. Since we already have quite a few registrants for winter training, the registration fees will remain $350. If, when we reach March of 2021, we have had no in-person training, all registrants will receive a refund of $150. If we are able to have a month or more of in-person training in 2021, the refund you receive will be adjusted appropriately (based on a rate of $50 per month). Please send all financial questions to Andrew Purdie at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What about ergs?
We will have a limited number of ergs available for rent over the winter training season. The cost for renting an erg over the season will be $150 (meaning if you register for winter training and also need an erg, the $350 registration fee will cover everything, you just won’t get a refund). The distribution of ergs will take place on Monday, November 30th at the IRC boathouse (or sometime that week if your schedule does not allow for pickup on the 30th). You must email me directly (email@example.com) by Thursday, November 19th if you would like an erg for the winter. If we have enough ergs to honor your request, you will be notified by Monday, November 23rd. You must be able to pick up the erg on Monday, November 30th or sometime that week (not before). The list below shows those I have heard from so far that need an erg. In order to rent an erg you must be registered for winter training first.
