Welcome to IRC Junior Rowing, Spring 2025
The Indianapolis Rowing Center Junior Rowing program is for students in the Indianapolis area grades 9-12. We are a no-cut, year-round program, and no experience is required. We have a number of different options available depending on your level of experience and interest.
Our competitive year starts each fall, running from late August to early November. During this season we practice out of our Eagle Creek Park boathouse and compete in a number of regattas in the Midwest region. Each year our fall season ends in Chattanooga, TN at the Head of the Hooch, one of the largest regattas in the country.
During the winter season, which runs from mid-November to early March, we train indoors at a local gym. We are currently working out of the AFCO Crossfit gym in Zionsville. We combine work on the indoor rowing machines with strength and conditioning workouts. Our winter season ends with our participation in the Indianapolis Indoor Rowing Championships.
Spring season runs from mid-March through mid-May and is back at our Eagle Creek Park boathouse. During the season we compete in several regional regattas before ending our season at the Midwest Rowing Championships in Cincinnati, OH. This regatta is a qualifying regatta for the USRowing Youth National Championships, to which we send a number of crews each season.
Finally, our summer season, also at Eagle Creek, is an opportunity for our athletes to have some fun in a low-pressure environment, working on technical development and fitness improvement.

2025 Spring Season Schedule
Practices will start on Monday, March 10 at AFCO Crossfit in Zionsville. If the weather allows we may invite teams to practice on the water at the boathouse this week. Decisions on if/who will practice at the boathouse will be made the evening before each practice day to allow participants to plan accordingly.
Our regattas this season will be:
- March 22nd: Scrimmage in St. Louis with St. Lous and Oklahoma City (Girls/Boys Black only). This is a scrimmage practice not a full regatta and will be sweep rowing only for the black teams. We will start at 10:00am and finish by 1:00pm. There will be no bus transportation provided, athletes will need to carpool to the regatta. The timing of the regatta is such that you can leave early Saturday morning and make it to the race course in time to participate. We'd like everybody at the course no later than 9:15 that day. It is roughly a four hour trip to St. Louis, but there is an hour time change in our favor going west. We will have a complementary hotel room block available if you would like to reserve a hotel room for Friday night. Atheltes will be responsible for paying for their own hotel rooms on this trip. The only cost associated with this trip will be for transporting the boats and paying for coaches overnight stay on Friday night as they will drive the boats over on Friday afternoon.
- April 12th: Cincinnati Invitational Regatta, Cincinnati, OH (Girls/Boys Red & Black). Our traditional first regatta of the season for our red and black teams. LTR will not be attending this regatta. In 2024 this was a sweep only regatta, I expect it to be the same this year. Busses will be leaving from Eagle Creek Park at 11:30am on Friday, April 11th. We will be practicing at the course Friday afternoon. We will be returning Saturday evening.
- April 25th - 27th: Dogwood Junior Championships, Oak Ridge, TN (Girls/Boys Red & Black, LTR, selected Middle School). The entire team will be racing at Dogwood Junior Championships. We will be leaving from Eagle Creek Park on Friday, April 25th at 7:30am. This will get the team to the race course in time for the 4:00pm Friday start for the 1x, 2x, and 2- events. Return will be late Sunday night.
- May 3rd - 4th: Indianapolis Junior Rowing Championships, Indianapolis, IN (Girls/Boys Red & Black, LTR, Middle School). Our home regatta with sculling events on Saturday and sweep events on Sunday. Racing will be all day on both days. Athletes may not be entered in events on both days, depending on their skills and equipment availability. Athletes will be expected to be at the venue both days. Athletes not racing may be asked to volunteer to help run the regatta and assist their teammates as required.
- May 17th - 18th: Midwest Junior Rowing Championships, Cincinnati, OH (Girls/Boys Red & Black, LTR, selected Middle School). Busses will be leaving from Eagle Creek Park at 11:30am on Friday, May 16th. We will be practicing at the course Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening.
In addition to these regattas, we are hoping to coordinate a scrimmage practice at our facility with some of the nearby local teams for both the middle school and junior teams.
Youth National Championships
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the USRowing Youth National Championships. It will be held once again in Sarasota, FL from Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, June 15. Our travel process for this year's Youth Nationals will be different than it has in the past.
- Athletes in qualified boats selected to attend Youth Nationals will travel individually to Sarasota, FL. We will not be arranging team travel this year. Athletes should plan on being in Sarasota by the evening of Tuesday, June 10th so that we can rig boats and practice on Wednesday, June 11th.
- We will have a courtesy hotel block at the team hotel that will be available to athletes. Athletes are not required to stay this hotel and may arrange alternative accomodations if they chose. Athletes will be directly responsible for the cost of their lodging.
- A schedule of team activities will be published prior to the team arriving in Sarasota. This schedule will include team meeting times at the team hotel, as well as rigging, practice and event times at Nathan Benderson Park. Athletes will be expected to attend all published team activities. Parents will be required to provide transportation to these activities. Parents are responsible for athletes outside of these planned team activities.
- Upon completion of the event, athletes will be billed for costs associated with:
- Coaching stipends
- Coaching accomodations
- Equipment transportation
- Event entry fees
- Other fees paid for by the club associated with participation in the event
