Junior summer rowing is for experienced rising 9th through 12th graders, current IRC rowers, and athletes with experience rowing for other clubs. This summer we are going to begin implementing two options for IRC rowers to choose from.

Middle School Options Coming Soon!

IRC Red Group

The red group is going to be focused on skills development in a less intense environment. This will be serious rowing (probably still with a fun Friday with Coach Julia), but the volume and intensity will be less than what you would expect in our competition seasons. This group is intended for the following athletes:

  • Rising freshmen coming from our middle school program who are looking to ease into high school rowing and continue improving their on-the-water skills.

  • Athletes that are looking to get experience in smaller boats and/or sculling for the first time without the pressure of needing to prepare to compete in those events.

  • Any athlete that is looking to stay connected with rowing and their teammates over the summer but who wants to take a break from the rigors of intense practice and preparation.

  • Athletes with other commitments (job, travel, other camps, etc.) during the summer that will minimize the amount of time that they have available to row.

Athletes in the red group will be able to attend up to four practices each week (can be less if they wish), selected from the nine available sessions. Athletes in the red group will not be required to attend erg/strength sessions during the summer, but they are encouraged to do so independently. Guidance will be provided to those red group athletes who wish to do some additional independent training.

Red Group Program: $550

IRC Black Group

The black group is going to will follow a more intense training regimen that will include on-the-water practice as well as required dry-land strength and conditioning. The black group will also attend one regatta this summer, the Chicago Sprints, from July 12 thru July 14, provided there is sufficient interest from the participants to build event entries.

This group is intended for the following athletes:

  • Rising junior and senior experienced athletes who wish to compete for spots in top boats during the fall 2024 and spring 2025 seasons.

  • Athletes looking to have a highly competitive experience this summer.

  • Athletes looking to improve their 2k times in support of collegiate recruiting.

Athletes in the black group will be EXPECTED to attend five practices each week and complete at least two additional erg/strength sessions. They may attend as many of these sessions as they wish, with coach approval. Erg/strength sessions will be available after most morning practices and before most afternoon practices (weather and coach availability permitting). A strength and conditioning plan will be provided for athletes to follow. Athletes may do these sessions on their own should their summer time commitments not allow them to be done during the session times.

Black group program: $650 for the summer. This does not include regatta costs

Junior Learn-to-Row

We are exploring the possibility of having a Learn-to-Row style program for rising 8th to 12th graders. More details on this will be forthcoming if you are interested in learning to row this summer, please contact Coach Mike at Mike@indyrowing.org
